So...I was going through my portfolio recently and I noticed that I didn't have any book covers. I like to read. I finish at least one book a month. I even had book cover assignments in art school. However, I only had one book cover but, the one that I had I didn't really like the finished product.
To fix this problem, I decided to pick a few public domain stories that I enjoyed and use the stories to recreate a modern day book cover. Also, I wanted to add more book covers to my portfolio because I would like the opportunity to design and illustrate book covers. The first thing that grabs me when I'm looking for a new book to read is the cover. As an artist, it would be nice to give that a person the same feeling I have when looking for a new story to read.
For this self initiated project, I decided to go with The Wizard of Oz and The Secret Garden. I chose these two first because they were my favorites growing up and many people don't know that the movies are based off of books.
First, I started with the sketch I used when I was in art school. I made few updates to it. Since graduation, I have gotten alot better at drawing certain details. Also, my skills in inking as improved alot also. After the inking, I scanned the image and began cleaning up some of the line work in Photoshop.
After the cleanup was complete, I began coloring the image in Photoshop. I used the basic Photoshop brush and most of the image was completed on one layer. The gold color of the Wicked Witch's cape was a gold foil overlay that I found on online.
