Recently, I was contacted to create an illustration of Jackie Ormes for Broadly.com Jackie Ormes was the first African-American woman to have a syndicated comic strip in a newspaper. She was also a civil rights activist.
I started with a few process sketches by using photographs of Ormes and panels from the comics she created. She often stated that her characters where not based on her. But, there is a clear resemblance. I wanted to incorporate her artwork into the portrait so, thumbnail #2 ended up being the strongest.
